Twelve signs, four elements
The Zodiac Circle, Organized
Each of the twelve signs belongs to one of four elements and one of three modalities. Together they form a simple grid for reading the circle before any sign is studied on its own.
The triplicities
Signs by element
Fire, earth, air, and water each group three signs that share a temperament. Read a sign's element first, then its modality, then its ruling planet.
Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Cardinal, fixed, and mutable fire signs share energy and initiative. Their ruling planets are Mars, the Sun, and Jupiter.
Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Earth signs emphasize steadiness, material detail, and practical planning. Their ruling planets are Venus, Mercury, and Saturn.
Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Air signs focus on ideas, exchange, and connection. Their ruling planets are Mercury, Venus, and Uranus.
Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Water signs relate to feeling, memory, and intuition. Their ruling planets are the Moon, Pluto, and Neptune.
Modalities add a second layer: cardinal signs start seasons, fixed signs sustain them, and mutable signs adapt between them. Each sign's modality shapes how its element expresses itself.
Use the element and modality together to see how two signs can share a temperament while approaching it differently.
Natal chart basics
Anatomy of a natal chart
A natal chart maps the planets, signs, and houses calculated for an exact moment and location of birth. The wheel is divided into twelve houses, each describing an area of life.
The rising sign marks the sign on the eastern horizon at birth. Planetary rulers show how each sign is expressed, and geometric aspects, the angles between planets, describe how those placements interact.
The sun sign is one piece of the chart. The moon and rising sign add nuance beyond sun-sign columns.
